Passports issued through the Tatkal facility are fast tracked and usually provided when there is an urgency for a passport. This service covers new passport requests and re-issues, but can only be applied for if the applicant has a genuine need for a fast-tracked passport.
The Consular, Ministry of External Affairs, and Passport & Visa Division are responsible for issuing and reissuing passports in India. They have laid down some processes from application to issuance, which includes several stages, both online and offline. Below is a step by step guide to help you through the process.
In January 2016, a law was laid down that involves verification by the police during the post-issue stage. All passport applicants have to appear at the regional office before the passports can be processed.
If there is no police verification required, your passport will be issued and dispatched within one working day. However, if post issuance police verification is needed, then your passport will be issued and dispatched on the third working day.
In some situation like an application for a minor, adoption, name change, lost passport, dubious documentation, and much more, the time frame could take up to 1 month; not including the date of submission. If you are an Indian citizen of J&K and Nagaland, your application will also require extra time. But as long as no conflicting report is discovered about you or your application, the time frame is usually reliable.
Tatkal passports are issued for ten years and come in a blue cover consisting of 36 or 60 pages. These passports can be renewed for ten years and can be used for business or vacation.

FAQ
Q. I will like to make my payment online when I book my appointment. How can I do this?
A: When making your online application, you only need to make a payment as you would normally do when applying under the regular category. The balance of this fee — which makes up the Tatkal category — will be paid on your appointment date at Passport Seva Kendra. You can use the fee calculator on the Passport Seva website to know the exact fee applicable to you.
Q. I need to travel urgently, and my passport is damaged, what should I do?
A: Is your passport number visible? Is your name legible and photo intact? If so, you should simply apply for a re-issue of the passport under the Tatkaal scheme. However, if your passport is completely damaged, you will not be able to apply for one through Tatkal. But you can still make an urgent passport request, just visit your nearest Passport Seva Kendra for assistance.
Q. What is appointment quota? I was asked to choose one during my online application.
A: There are two types of Tatkal application categories: ‘Normal’ and ‘Tatkal.’ If you cannot book an appointment due to the Tatkal quota, you should try the normal route. But note that the fees charged will not be excluded irrespective of which category you book.
Q. Normal vs. Tatkal, what is the difference in cost and time frame?
A: A normal passport application cost Rs 1500 and Rs 2000 for 36 and 60 pages respectively. Normal passports take 25-35 days, and you have to take your geographical location into consideration. A Tatkal application cost Rs 3500 and Rs 4000 for 36 and 60 pages respectively. The quick processing means that the passport will get to you in 8-12 days depending on your location.
Q. Can I change my normal appointment to a Tatkal one?
A: This is easy, change your application type online and on the day of your appointment, simply pay the extra fee. You have to log into your online account and choose “View saved/submitted application” on the left side of your home page. Click on the application page and change the status from normal to Tatkal.
First, inform a Passport Seva representative that you want to change your application. This is because your application letter will state Tatkal in application type. The information will be updated on the system allowing you to see the “View saved/submitted application” option, then only can you follow the above steps.
Q. After converting my application type, will the application fee be adjusted?
A: Yes, you will need to pay the balance at the Passport Seva counter.
Q. Will I pay Rs 3500 if I convert from Tatkal to normal?
A: Since you only paid the normal fee during your online application, on the day of your appointment you don’t have to balance up for Tatkal. You will have to inform the representative of your intentions, and your account will be modified accordingly.
